Treasure grandparents and their legacy with beautiful photographs – you won’t regret it.

If you're lucky enough to have your grandparents in your life, or your children are lucky enough to have theirs, then you'll know that the relationship between family elders and children is something special. Grandparents get to spoil without repercussions, love without complications, and play without rushing. They've basically got it made. (I can't wait to be a grandparent one day!) Celebrating the connection between children and their important family members is such a beautiful gift to give, not only to your children, but to the entire family. To record the small details, the time spent together, and the

Create a photographic record while self-isolating

Here are some tips to help you create your own photographic record, your own little time capsule, until your favourite photographer can get you all in the frame again. Look, life is a bit weird right now. Let’s all admit it. It’s the time of year when we’re all usually busy bees, celebrating the gorgeous autumn weather and madly feathering our nests for winter in all sorts of different ways - but instead, the majority of us are currently self-isolating. Life looks so different to the autumns we’re used to. Maybe we’re lonely, maybe we’re overstimulated, maybe we’re staying

Remembering your family at home: your future self will thank you

Welcome to this family's Saturday. In one of my previous posts I talked about why choosing to have your family photographed while enjoying a big tradition you love can make for an amazing, emotional documentary collection. But what about the little traditions that you enjoy every day? In this edition, I'm going to let one of my clients tell you why she commissioned me to use my unposed photography skills to capture - really capture - a Saturday morning at home with her family. Before our session, we talked about the things she and her husband really wanted to remember about this time with their

Family Photos You’ll Love: how to get amazing portraits you don’t have to pose for

Do you want to know the secret to amazing, genuine, gorgeous family photos? Pull up a chair and pop a bag of popcorn (save some for me!), because if you’re willing to read on, I’m going to tell you.  No, you don’t have to have flower crowns. No, you don’t have to have a beautifully-styled house. No, you definitely don’t have to frolic in a meadow at sunset! (Who actually DOES that in their real lives, anyway?) So how DO you make sure you’ll get photographs you absolutely love? Simple - choose something you and your family LOVE to do,

Documentary maternity photography – Mummy and me

You're going to love this. And if you don't, well, I don't want to talk badly to you, but you might be a bit of a monster. Isabel is pregnant, but wanted to do something different. She wasn't worried about lots of photographs of herself and her bump, posed luxuriously and flatteringly (and talking to the parents-t0-be of second babies, I find this is a common theme). Instead, she wanted to focus on her little daughter Rosalind and their relationship together - a relationship which will no doubt change forever when Rosalind's little brother is born. We wanted to celebrate these last

Why you should choose a spring documentary photo shoot

It's that time of year again. The sun is shining, the flowers are blooming, the days are stretching, and the weather is completely unpredictable! What you probably don't know is that late spring is the absolute perfect time for a documentary family photo shoot. (Especially if you live in the Hawkesbury in Sydney - dang, is it gorgeous out here!) If you've never considered commissioning a beautiful, one-of-a-kind unposed portrait session before, here are six reasons to pick up the phone and book in with your favourite relaxed photographer (me) before the end of spring. Why you should choose a spring documentary photo shoot 1. Flowers

Unposed family photography – Toby at home

I love loyal repeat clients. I have a lot of them. The benefits of cultivating a relationship with a client over multiple sessions and many years is that I know what they love, I know what they're looking for, and I know their family dynamics and personalities, so I can give them the absolute best images possible every time. I know what's meaningful to them. In this case, I know Emily, Graham and Toby, because this is my SIXTH session with them. I photographed (get ready for it) their engagement session, their wedding, Emily's pregnancy, the days straight after their son was born, their beautiful

Unposed family photography Hunter Valley – jacaranda mini sessions

I do a lot of work in the Hunter Valley, and while I'd love to boast that it's just because I'm in high demand up there, the truth is that it is one of my favourite NSW locations, ever. The landscape is stunning, the people are wonderful, the children are laid-back and cute as buttons, and the weather is always phenomenal. Even on a windy, overcast spring day, there's something special about the mood up there. It just breathes life. Alison and Bridget and their families are wonderful loyal clients of mine, and to date I have captured their babies

Unposed newborn photography: Julian takes a bath

Who knew that just taking a bath could capture the fragility, the exquisiteness, the brand-newness of a baby? This is just a small part of a session I did with little baby Julian when he was only twelve days new. His parents, and doting big sister, wanted some very relaxed, unposed portraits at their home, which is a small Wahroonga apartment. The bathroom had no windows or natural light, but only using overhead light? No worries. That's your bathroom - that's where you bath your baby every day. You're going to spend a lot of time in there - let's

Family documentary shoot – Robbie on the farm

This is the third time I have photographed little Robbie and his family - I photographed his amazing mother Bridget while she was pregnant, being loved by her gorgeous horses (you can see it here), and then I photographed Robbie and his parents when he was only a few weeks old (you can see it here!). Horses are a running theme with Bridget's shoots! So when I was called back to photograph Robbie again at fifteen months, in an entirely documentary family photography session, I was so happy. The way I shoot is loose, and relaxed, and pretty much the opposite of in-your-face. Here I

Family shoot – Rory in Scone

Shooting in the Hunter Valley area of New South Wales has always been a serious perk of my job - I love the scenery, the people, the horses, the relaxed atmosphere - I love pretty much everything about it. (You can see a previous shoot of a Scone maternity and newborns here and here!) I photographed young Rory and his lovely parents when he was a wrinkly little newborn, and I was so honoured to be asked to come to document him at five months old. Family documentary photography has become my obsession and my passion, and I just can't do anything photographically that

Newborn shoot – Rory

Scone, in country New South Wales, is a place that I absolutely love to visit - and it seems they like me, too. I've done many jobs out there now and they just keep rolling in. The people are friendly, the scenery is fabulous, the animals are always right there, and the babies are deeeeelicious. Little baby Rory's newborn session was heralded by stormy, constantly changing weather, wild winds, and a dog who just loved to frolic (c'mon, seriously - how cute is he?!). And, my favourite thing - the horses. They're pretty big horse people around there. We stayed

Newborn shoot – Bridget on the farm

You might remember Bridget from the maternity session I did with her with her horses and dogs in Scone, NSW. When her baby arrived, she asked me to come back to the country to see her darling little baby boy (who made me insanely clucky, I might add!). We talked about motherhood as I took photos of her feeding and cuddling little Robbie in bed, then I photographed her lovely family doing what they do best. I would love to visit rural New South Wales and do some more country shooting. Horse people, dog people, cow people, wheat people -

Newborn shoot – Baby Z

You might remember Alana from this intimate black and white maternity session I photographed earlier in the year - well, her baby is here, and he is GORGEOUS. While not technically a newborn shoot, since baby Z was three months old at the time of shooting, this was his first foray in front of the professional lens, and as you can see, he ain't bad. Taken at their Oatley home, Alana and her partner wanted black and white images that captured their baby's little details and their natural interactions as a family. Their style is quite unique, but luckily it
